Location: CHAPEL HILL, NC
UNC-CHAPEL HILL: PORTHOLE ALLEY
The goal of this feasibility study is to enhance an important entrance to the campus located between Franklin Street and Cameron Avenue, familiarly known as the Porthole Alley entrance. It was named for the now defunct Porthole Alley restaurant. The alley entrance into the campus is located within the 100 east block of Franklin Street. This corridor created between the Alley and Cameron Avenue is a heavily used area of pedestrian and bicycle access into the campus. Additionally, several public venues, including Memorial Hall, Hill Hall and the Alumni Sculpture Garden, are accessed by the public through the alley.
We are the architect on this project which is being led by the Landscape Architects, Surface 678. The architectural scope includes the feasibility study and concept development to transform the exsiting structures to support the Art and Performing Arts departments at UNC.
The proposed plan will include:
- Creation of an appropriate connection between Campus & Downtown Chapel Hill
- Improved Pedestrian, Bike and Vehicle Safety
- Accessible Pathway
- Lighting
- Signage
- Recognition of Historical Character
- Coordination with Town and University
- Cost Estimates
