The Inner Arbor Amphitheater project was a design and feasibility response to an invited, national request for proposals by the Inner Arbor Trust. The Trust developed a Conceptual Masterplan for the existing Merriweather Post Pavilion on a 50 acre site in Columbia, Maryland. The Vision called for a “new kind of cultural park where landscape becomes a setting for arts, cultural and civic uses.†The brief called for the implementation of the project in two phases, working with the currently available funds and within the outlines of the Concept Plan + Vision Statement. Phase 1 was to assess the feasibility, plan and design a new outdoor performance pavilion to compliment the current large scale Merriweather Concert Venue with a more intimate setting.

Although Phase 1 called for only the design of the Amphitheater and Concessions Building, the Conceptual Masterplan called for a new arts walk- The Symphony Woods Park- that was to weave through the park and existing trees at grade and above to provide a new experience of 50 acre site.
We thought of our proposal not just as a Phase 1 architectural structure, but rather a catalyst for the principles of the masterplan as a whole. Conceptually we proposed the idea of the Pavilion as not a ‘object’, but rather a full intertwining of program, landscape, art and structure into a singular, contiguous element....for us the pavilion should not be a building necessarily, but a direct transformation and extension of landscape. Our proposal called for the preservation of all trees and the integration of seating within the existing landscape. We envisioned the canopy, rigging, stage, and the all required ADA ramps and site circulation elements to be designed within a consistent, singular language suggestive of the delicate, sculptural quality of a landscape pavilion that rested lightly on the site and suggested opportunities for seamless expansion to accommodate the future Phase 2 Arts Park. Not knowing the future of private funding, the project was intended to feel complete at the end of Phase 1, while being easily expandable and suggestive of opportunities for the phased addition of future elements.

INNER ARBOR TREEHOUSE AMPHITHEATER
